Nicholas Lalla is an urbanist and writer whose work examines how American cities can thrive amid economic, technological, and environmental disruption.
Through work spanning civic entrepreneurship, public policy, strategy consulting, and nonfiction writing, Lalla has established a body of work that bridges ideas and practice.
From 2019 to 2023, Lalla led Tulsa Innovation Labs, an economic development organization he founded. Tulsa Innovation Labs raised more than $250 million in public, private, and philanthropic capital to build tech clusters in northeast Oklahoma—winning the Build Back Better Regional Challenge and Tech Hubs grants from the U.S. Department of Commerce, one of only two cities in the country to win both. On track to grow 70,000 jobs over the next decade, Tulsa Innovation Labs has been recognized by Harvard Business School and The Brookings Institution as a national model.
Previously, he led Cyber NYC at the New York City Economic Development Corporation—a $30 million initiative The New York Times described as "among the nation's most ambitious cybersecurity initiatives”—and launched the urban resilience program at the Urban Land Institute to help cities nationwide combat the effects of climate change.
In 2025, HarperCollins published his book Reinventing the Heartland: How One City's Inclusive Approach to Innovation and Growth Can Revive the American Dream. A practitioner's guide for building inclusive innovation economies, the book was endorsed by Richard Florida, Darren Walker, Bruce Katz, and other national leaders.
Lalla completed his undergraduate studies, with honors, at Northwestern University and earned a master's degree in African American Studies from Cornell University on a Sage Fellowship. His graduate research explored post-Katrina New Orleans revitalization efforts through the lens of racial politics. He also completed executive leadership training at Dartmouth's Tuck School of Business.
His writing has appeared in Wired, HuffPost, Fortune, Newsweek, and Fast Company, among other outlets. In 2026, he was invited to contribute an essay for the International Economic Development Council’s Centennial Thought Leadership Series.
Lalla has spoken at conferences around the world, including South by Southwest, MIT Solve's U.S. Equity Summit, the Fast Company Innovation Festival, Jobs for the Future's Horizons Summit, CyberTech-Tel Aviv, and the New Orleans Book Festival at Tulane. In 2026, alongside two mayors, he represented the United States as part of a trans-Atlantic delegation to the Regional Economic Development Policy Conference in Germany.
